"Fair Trade Learning">>Presented by Eric Hartman, Ph.D., Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University. Co-facilitated by the Building Bridges Coalition.
Fair Trade Learning is an ethical framework for global service, volunteering, and learning partnerships that emerged in response to the worrisome marketization of the international volunteering and "voluntourism" sectors. The Fair Trade Learning framework has been utilized and vetted in scores of community partnerships around the world, published in several peer-reviewed journals, and featured in The Guardian. This webinar will share the framework and an associated stakeholder rubric while offering space for discussion of each with Dr. Eric Hartman, one of the practitioner-scholars central to the development of this approach.
Dr. Hartman is an Assistant Professor of Leadership Studies at Kansas State University, Editor of globalsl.org, and a Steering Group member of the Better Volunteering, Better Care Network.

"Learning Service – a framework for cross-cultural exchange">>Presented by Daniela Papi, Deputy Director, Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship. Co-facilitated by the Building Bridges Coalition.
Daniela Papi-Thornton will walk us through the key themes of Learning Service, as a preview of the model driving her upcoming book. Over the last two years, Daniela and a team have been co-authoring a book about rethinking volunteer travel, designed to help those people considering international service to make decisions that best align with personal and global development. Daniela will spend 30 minutes offering key learnings for those in the volunteer travel sector followed by a Q&A.
Daniela Papi-Thornton is the Deputy Director of the Skoll Centre for Social Entrepreneurship at Oxford's Saïd Business School. She is also the founder of PEPY, a Cambodian youth leadership organization, PEPY Tours, a development education travel company, and "Learning Service", an advocacy group designed to help people rethink responsible international volunteering. She loves building community and has co-created the Monthly Resolutions Club, London’s Brainfood Discussions, Hibernate, and a gratitude journal projected. She is a fellow on the Clore Social Leadership Programme and frequently blogs and does talks about the lessons she has learned through her work. "Principles and Pathways: Exploring Frameworks and Tools for Public Service">>Presented by Thomas Schnaubelt, Executive Director, Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University. Co-facilitated by the Building Bridges Coalition.
In 2002, the Haas Center for Public Service at Stanford University developed Principles for Ethical and Effective Service. More recently, the Haas Center for has worked with a wide range of stakeholders to develop a framework for social change: Pathways of Public Service. Collectively, the Principles and Pathways shape the Haas Center’s work by describing a range of possibilities by which students can make a contribution to the common good. The Principles inform how we engage in that work and includes six pathways: direct service, community-engaged learning and research, activism, philanthropy, policy/politics, and social entrepreneurship. Introducing this framework to students allows them to explore the ways the public service pathways differ from each other in language, practice, and impact.
Participants will learn how to use the Pathways of Public Service, along with its seven Principles of Ethical and Effective Service, as a framework for exploring and engaging students in social change. Dr. Schnaubelt will describe exercises designed to introduce students to the Principles and Pathways. Additionally, participants will learn about a diagnostic tool that helps faculty and staff understand student predispositions and interests.
Tom Schnaubelt is the Executive Director of the Haas Center for Public Service and an Assistant Vice Provost for Student Affairs at Stanford University. He previously served as the Dean for Community Engagement and Civic Learning at the University of Wisconsin-Parkside and the Executive Director of Wisconsin Campus Compact. His career began in Mississippi, where he directed several statewide AmeriCorps programs and built capacity for community engagement at colleges and universities across the state. He holds a BS in Physics from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, an MA in Education from the University of Michigan, and a Ph.D. in Education from the University of Mississippi.

As more and more students look at taking a Gap Year, so too are there recognitions about the costs associated with a quality Gap Year. More and more the pall of exclusivity is lobbed at organizations because of the cost-disparity, and, while many organizations offer some scholarships or minor discounts, there's a growing recognition that students always have some extra funding-gap requiring additional efforts. Colleges, of course have consistent and fairly easy access to Federal Financial Aid, however, most Gap Year organizations do not offer such eligibility for FAFSA and thus, less traditional methods of funding their experience is a growing and vital part of their Gap Year.
As we all know, traveling especially has greater risks for the uninitiated, making the funding of such Gap opportunities all the more important for student safety such that the learning and exploration can be trained by qualified programs, which, necessarily have additional costs. Join us as we delve into some of the less traditional, but successful, fundraising strategies that you can share with your students. These ideas are road-tested and will hopefully make more of your inquiries able to embark on their Gap Year.
Our speaker, Natalie Canfield, is currently the Director of Customer Development for a new online crowdfunding site called Project Travel. She has a long history of working in the Study Abroad field of Higher Education, having previously worked for Global Links Learning Abroad as the Assistant Director of Global Internships. She also has a long history with EUSA Academic Internships, and Northeaster University, a school well known for responsible international ethics of service-learning and education.
